One thing I really take issue with is when people defend language apps on the basis that "it can't teach you everything" because on one hand this is true almost by definition, you can't learn a language without interacting with it to some extent in real life situations, but this also gives apps so much room to excuse lack of content or poorly designed lessons. However I understand why people are frustrated about the way the change was handled especially as there still seem to be so many variations to how duolingo works depending on how you are accessing it. I have been enjoying the new path and feel like I am learning more and retaining better since I switched on to it. I like duolingo but I think the fact it's free is used to side step a lot of the issues with it. P.S I do think there is valid criticism of Duolingo, & ways they can improve, ofcourse! I am not discounting those, just sharing how I appreciate the app for learning. To me, it is a single tool, you can't expect to use one tool to build a house, and you can't expect just use one tool to learn a language! Overall I'm excited, I am starting to understand Spanish texts better and Duolingo is helping with that. I am still learning and can skip ahead if I feel it's too easy, or go back if it's too hard. I have the new path layout and also enjoy that too. Ranks and streaks are not important to me - learning is.
I participate in the ranks and strive to earn streaks, but when I lose them I just try again. I can feel myself improving and I know that Duolingo is providing a solid foundation for me to learn the language. I do lessons when I feel motivated (which is quite often!) and outside of Duolingo I read beginner texts, watch shows in Spanish with Spanish subtitles, have my phone language in Spanish, and use other apps that focus more heavily on one thing like reading or listening etc. I don't use Duolingo alone and I don't expect to become fluent quickly by using the app. Free education and information is soreley underrated and the level and ease of free learning that Duolingo provides is amazing!įor transparency, I used it free for a while and am now on the paid family plan. I see a lot of complaints so I wanted to share my love for Duolingo.
